William Wakefield, 32, appeared in the High Court in Wellington today in relation to the death of Lincoln Wakefield last June.

The baby was rushed to hospital and had surgery for serious head injuries, but later died.

Mr Wakefield pleaded guilty to the boy's manslaughter, but denied murdering him or wounding him with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Justice Dobson did not enter a conviction, as the Crown indicated it wanted to try Mr Wakefield for murder.

He remanded Mr Wakefield in custody until his next court appearance next month.
