Learning support specialists to start month-long industrial action

9:20 pm on 20 January 2019

Ministry of Education employees who support children with learning needs are taking industrial action for a month, starting tomorrow.

The Education Institute said about 55 members were unhappy a bid to gain parity with other managers employed by the Ministry of Education failed.

NZEI's president Lynda Stuart said the ministry's latest offer had been rejected because it did little to shift workers to a comparable rate with other employees.

She said people taking part won't attend some meetings, or work beyond eight hours a day and 40 hours per week.

"For many of our teachers and people who are working in education they are working over 50 hours a week. It's not just the work that you do when you are within the Ministry of Education office or in meetings in schools, it can often be the work that you take home with you."

The industrial action will run from 7am tomorrow morning until 7pm on the 28th of February.
