Police were called to the scene, at the corner of Red Hills Road and Sunnyvale Road in Taupaki about 1am by a neighbour who said they had heard a gun shot.

Inspector Kerry Watson said a cordon was put in place on Red Hills Road and an Eagle helicopter was called in.

He said the helicopter spotted a nearby resident come out of their home and point a gun at them.

"Whilst making enquiries, Eagle helicopter was flying overhead. They told us that a resident of a nearby address had come out and presented a firearm at them.

"As a result of that we have now cordoned that address, we called in our armed offenders squad to assist us to clear that address.

He said the armed offenders squad was then dispatched and called the man out.

"We've now cleared that address and we've taken three people away."

Mr Watson said one man was being questioned.

Cordons on Red Hills Road have been lifted.
