Police have confirmed it was a group of surfers who found the body of Sonam Shelar on a Wairarapa beach.

The 26-year-old was five months pregnant and went missing from the Wellington suburb of Khandallah on Saturday.

After an extensive search for the woman in Wellington, her body was discovered by surfers yesterday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Warwick McKee says police hope to have a post-mortem completed today, but no further updates were expected.

Ms Shelar's next of kin had been notified and the case has been referred to the Coroner.

The police investigation is ongoing and they are working closely with Ms Shelar's family to find out what happened to her.

Police want to hear from anyone who may have seen Ms Shelar on Friday or Saturday.
