Police said the incident happened when a group of youths walked into the school last Friday.
They've charged a 17-year-old and he appeared in the Kaikohe court on Wednesday charged with two counts of assault.
A Board of Trustees member, Justin Blaikie, said the college was taking the episode very seriously.
Security guards will be stationed at the school for the next three weeks and the Board will discuss ongoing security options at its meeting later this month, he said.
Mr Blaikie said there had been violent incidents at the college in the past, including what he described as a near-riot a few months ago.
He believed the culture of aggression was the result of years of failed social policy and governmental neglect in the Northland town.
