The Tasman District Council decided today to back-track on an earlier decision to remove the building, and the group fighting to keep it will be handed the reins.

The grandstand overlooking the Takaka showgrounds in Golden Bay was earmarked for removal when it was decided to build a new community centre.

The council today gave the community group the chance to apply for a lease of the site and to restore the building.

It also agreed the group could use the money set aside to remove the building for restoration.

Mayor Richard Kempthorne said some issues still needed to be resolved before the grandstand could be used.
