Police are continuing investigations after a 48-year old hunter was shot and critically injured in the Kaimanawa Ranges.

It's understood the man was hunting in the ranges with a companion, who shot him after mistaking him for a deer.
Police said a scene examination would take place today and enquiries were ongoing.
They said the incident was a timely reminder that hunters should identify their target beyond all doubt before pulling the trigger.
