The break-in to Wellington Zoo's squirrel monkey enclosure suggests someone wanted to steal one, chief executive Karen Fifield says.

Some of the monkeys were injured during the incident, and two ended up in the next door enclosure with the golden lion tamarins after the Saturday night break in.

Bolt cutters were used in the "well-thought through" attack, Ms Fifield said.

"The injuries we're seeing on the monkeys obviously looks like someone's tried to grab them."

The monkeys were still a bit wary of people but they were eating now, she said.

An investigation into what happened, including a review of its security, would get underway, Ms Fifield said.
