Moana-Roa Haare, 62, who was known as 'Chief', collapsed and died on the shore of the Shotover River after his raft upturned on a section called the 'Toilet' rapid.
Preliminary post mortem results suggest Mr Haare died from a 'medical event' and his death has been referred to a Coroner.
Queenstown Rafting said yesterday more than 70 of Mr Haare's friends and colleagues were taken to his favourite section of the river to pay their respects.
Mr Haare had been working for the company since 1996.
