Strike action at Lyttelton Port is expected to resume on Wednesday, with negotiations over pay and safety for Rail and Maritime Transport Union members still unsettled.

About 200 union workers - nearly half of all the port's staff - went on strike for two days last week because negotiations broke down.

Union organiser John Kerr said they would like to sit back down with Lyttelton Port Company and sort things out before five more days of strike action got underway on Wednesday.

But he said it did not look likely at this stage.
