A review of the decision-making is needed after council staff chose to only monitor a North Shore carpark that later collapsed, an Auckland councillor says.

Parts of the Rawene carpark in Birkenhead gave way in October and again two months later.

A geotechnical report more than two years ago showed there were tension cracks and slope failures, but Auckland Transport opted to follow recommendations to regularly monitor the site rather than undergo costly repairs.

A local councillor, Chris Darby, said locals were asking for that decision to be looked at again.

"I think we just need to go back to that GHD report and look at how it landed at the high risk recommendation to monitor and not do anything further."

Chris Darby said he was also asked for more information about the scope of the monitoring.
