A new marae-based housing development officially opened in Christchurch today.

Six social housing properties - which feature double-glazing, full insulation and maximum natural light - have been built on Christchurch's Ngā Hau e Whā National Marae reservation in Aranui.
The project took seven years of planning, with delays including the Canterbury earthquakes.
General manager of the marae, Norm Dewes, said the houses would provide transitional support for people in need of an interim base.
"We've selected tenants who are a good fit. If they have nowhere to go, they can stay here for a while. Just to get a good start," he said.

Tenants can access wrap-around social services delivered on site including budgeting advice, parenting classes and driver licensing.
The $3m project has been shared between Te Puni Kōkiri, Housing New Zealand and the Rātā Foundation.
