One person is dead after a motorbike and a ute collided in Masterton last night, bringing the holiday road toll to 12.

Police said they were called to the crash around 5.20pm on McKinstry Ave, at the intersection with Masterton Castlepoint Road.

One person died at the scene, and another was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.

The Police Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

A tow truck was called to remove the vehicles from the scene about 8:20pm following the initial scene examination.

The official toll began on 22 December, and runs until January the third.

Nineteen people died on New Zealand's roads over the Christmas period last year, the highest toll in four years.
