It said on its Facebook page that this morning a 10-year-old cat and his owner were enjoying the sunshine at Camp Elsdon, a holiday park.

Several witnesses reported a man and a woman walk by with a large muscular dog, that was white with tan patches.

When they saw the cat, the couple told the dog to 'sic 'em' repeatedly, and encouraged it when it caught the cat.

The SPCA said the attack lasted 20 to 30 seconds, and ended when a fellow camper ran towards the dog, yelling.

Witnesses said the dog's owners laughed and continued walking towards Colonial Knob.

The cat suffered considerable injuries, including a broken pelvis that means he is unable to walk. He is being treated by a vet.

"It is incredibly concerning that a dog is being actively encouraged to bait other animals. It is especially concerning that the attack was instigated unprovoked," an SPCA spokesperson said.

The SPCA is asking anyone who saw the attack or has any information to contact it on 0800 INSPECTOR.
