Rohit Deepak Singh appeared briefly in the High Court in Auckland today.
Justice Moore set a trial date for October next year.
Ms Chand, who was 24, was killed last month after returning home from a party with her boyfriend.
Shortly after her boyfriend left the house, Ms Chand called her parents, saying she was worried someone was outside.
When her parents arrived 20 minutes later, they found her dead in a bedroom.
Mr Singh is due back in court in March next year for an administrative hearing.
