Otago and Southland motorists are being warned to be careful with freezing temperatures predicted in the south overnight.

Transport Agency spokesperson John Jarvis said temperatures of -7°C and below were expected in the lower South Island tonight, and drivers should expect icy conditions into the morning.

"We are anticipating the coldest night of the year to date with very cold, widespread temperatures across Southland, Otago and parts of Canterbury.

He said motorists should delay travel, and start work later tomorrow if possible.

People driving in alpine areas need to carry chains, he said.

MetService said Invercargill was facing a low of -4° overnight while Wanaka can look forward to -3°.

While Auckland will be balmy in comparison, dropping down to 10°, rain is unfortunately forecast for tomorrow's parade for Team New Zealand.

Wellington will get some chilly winds overnight but the temperature will be around 6°, while Christchurch will bottom out just above freezing level, Metservice said.
