The police broke up a group of about 300 party-goers from an annual private party on Dunedin's Stafford Street yesterday, and one person was arrested for a minor disorder offence.

Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield said the students were mostly good-natured, however police would be working to make sure it was a safe and pleasant event in future.

Otago University Student's Association president, Hugh Baird, said any such events should be cleared with the University's Proctor's office.

Students risked violating the student code of conduct if any trouble did occur, and they could face fines or community work, he said.
