A high number of voluntary redundancy applications shows there is low morale among Auckland library staff, their union says.

Plans for the region's libraries to be more digitally focused resulted in 104 people seeking to take voluntary redundancy, but only 74 being accepted.

Auckland Libraries general manager Mirla Edmundson said the redundancies were equivalent to 48 full-time staff.

Public Service Association national secretary Glenn Barclay said the numbers indicated morale in the libraries was low.

"It's a major review and it'll be having an impact," he said.

"We're working with the council and we're concerned [with making sure] that the knowledge and expertise of the librarians is not lost."

Mr Barclay said the union had been working closely with Auckland Council and expected the new system to be finalised soon.
