Man arrested in Riverhead quarry assault

Police have charged a man with the attack on a young woman in an Auckland quarry.

The woman was abducted on Saturday night two weeks ago from Ponsonby and woke up in a quarry in Riverhead, to find a man standing over her with a bat.

Police said they have this afternoon arrested a 59-year-old man at a house in Onehunga.

A 2008 Ford Mondeo which police were searching for was also seized at the property and forensically examined.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kim Libby said the news would bring a great deal of relief to the Auckland community.

He said was a traumatic experience for the victim and she was receiving ongoing support.

The man is due to appear in court tomorrow morning charged with abduction, wounding with intent, and assault with intent to commit sexual violation.
