Strong earthquake near Kaikōura

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake near Kaikōura last night has caused no damage, police say.

The earthquake struck at 11.21pm, and was centred 10km north of the town. It was 16km deep.

GeoNet said more than 2000 people have reported feeling the quake, from Canterbury through to Taranaki.

Kaikōura has had scores of strong aftershocks since a 7.8 magnitude quake on 14 November.
