Mini-tornadoes hit Otago

Cromwell residents are being warned to stay indoors after a spate of mini-tornadoes this afternoon.

The tornadoes struck the area around the Otago town about 6pm and police were telling people in the Summerfields area to stay inside and away from windows.

Motorcyclists and drivers of heavy vehicles were also advised to avoid driving through the Cromwell Basin.

Trailers have been overturned and fences and windows have been damaged.

There were no reports of injury at this stage.
