Migration and tourism reached a new record last month.

A record 260,200 tourists arrived last month, taking the annual tally to a new high of more than 3.4 million.

Meanwhile, official figures show a gain of about 7900 immigrants for the month of October, taking the annual tally to 70,300, compared with September's 70,000.

The data is incomplete because last week's earthquake disrupted Statistics New Zealand's processing and publishing.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister John Key indicated a tourist tax could be introduced, such as a bed tax or departure tax.

Mr Key, who is the Tourism Minister, told a Tourism Summit Aotearoa in Wellington doing nothing was not an option, with more and more tourists putting pressure on infrastructure around the country.
