A person has died after a fire in the Manawatu town of Feilding.
The person who died at the Fitzroy Street house was believed to have been an elderly woman who lived alone.
Manawatu assistant area commander Rodger Calder said the home appeared to have no working smoke alarm.
He said they could see the house was engulfed from the fire station when they pulled out, about 8pm yesterday.
Six fire engines and a command unit turned up to the fire, he said.
"The early warning of smoke alarms may well have had a different outcome for this lady," he said.
