The Commerce Commission says a text quiz operator has attracted what it thinks is the highest ever number of complaints.

TMG Asia Pacific pleaded guilty to breaching the Fair Trading Act by not properly disclosing that consumers faced an ongoing subscription when they answered a television advertisement competition in 2006.

The company was on Tuesday fined $125,000 in the Auckland District Court.

Commerce Commission manager of fair trading Greg Allan says the commission received about 700 complaints about the overseas-based firm, which he believes to be a record.

He says TMG made millions of dollars in the six months the company operated in New Zealand, although it did refund some money.
