Commuters using the Waiheke Island to Auckland ferry hope a law change may reverse a rise in their fares.
Campaigners want ferry operator Fullers to drop a $44 increase to its monthly pass and other rises imposed because of soaring fuel costs.
Fullers says diesel prices and currency markets are still affecting their budgets.
Auckland Regional Transport Authority says the Public Transport Management Act will allow it to impose price and other constraints on commercial operators from 2009 if they are fair.
However, it says transport operators are lobbying political parties in the hope that the incoming government will shelve the legislation.
