Auckland Transport says it is changing the rules in Fort Lane, Jean Batten Place and O'Connell St and plans to roll out the change on other one-way streets in the city.
Signs will advise road users that people may be cycling in both directions
The agency said cities such as Paris and London have successfully introduced two-way cycling on their one-way streets and it will assess other one-way streets for traffic volume and vehicle speeds before it makes further changes.
The first roads chosen for the change are so-called shared spaces, where pedestrians are not segregated from other traffic.
