The spectator killed at a motocross event near Cambridge at the weekend has been named.

He was Bruce Honore from Ngahinapouri.

Police and emergency services were called to the event at Leamington, near Cambridge, shortly after midday yesterday.

Police said the 68-year-old, who was standing in the crowd, died after he was hit by a motocross bike that came off the track.

Another spectator was flown to Waikato Hospital where she was in a serious but stable condition.

Motorcycling New Zealand president Glen Williams said accidents involving spectators were rare, and once the details were known, they intend to learn from what happened.

The serious crash unit is investigating and WorkSafe said an inspector was at the scene and was making initial inquiries.
