A Lower Hutt mother wants a law change to allow children and the elderly to ride bicycles on the footpath.
The current law only allows small bikes and people delivering newspapers to ride on footpaths.
Jo Clendon told Morning Report those aged under 14 and over 65 should be allowed to ride on footpaths.
"We have an ageing population and we also have the growing popularity of mobility trikes and electric bikes with older people and I think as they're very vulnerable users and vulnerable to injury it makes sense to allow them to be on the footpath too."
She said children under 12 were allowed to ride on the footpath in Australia and police did not enforce the law here.
She is petitioning Parliament to change the law.
