Rubbish reminder

4:12 pm on 1 September 2008

People in Hastings and Havelock North on Monday were confronted by art installations, depicting the amount of rubbish left on streets and footpaths.

They range from a car wreck in the centre of Havelock North to empty skips near the clock tower in Hastings.

Hastings District Council says they're designed to be an ugly reminder that on average people leave about 100 cubic metres of litter on city streets every month.

At peak times, the quantity is so great it would take just over three months to fill a 50 metre swimming pool

It says the annual cost of over $500,000 of collecting litter could easily be reduced, if people put it in a rubbish bin or took it home.
