School children taken to hospital after collision

Six Auckland primary school children have been taken to hospital after police say a bus they were travelling in drove through a stop sign and into a small car.

Emergency services say the Westmere School pupils suffered minor injuries and have been taken to hospital for observation.

The incident occurred about 10am on Friday at the intersection of Valley and Sherbourne roads in the suburb of Mt Eden.

Police say the driver of the Metrolink bus failed to give way at a stop sign and crashed into a Honda Civic.

Westmere School principal Carolyn Marino says the children were part of a group of about 40 pupils being taken to swimming lessons.

Those in hospital are expected to be discharged on Friday night. The driver of the car was not injured.

Senior Sergeant Scott Leonard says police are considering fining the driver.
