This Easter weekend should see clear skies and sunshine for much of the country, MetService says.

It said the North Island could expect mainly fine weather from Friday to Monday, with temperatures reaching the mid-20s in Gisborne.

But forecaster Emma Blades warned there could be some scattered showers.

"From Friday, it's going to be mainly fine, a little bit cloudy around Waitomo through to Kapiti, and there might be a few isolated showers in Northland and eastern Bay of Plenty," she said.

"Going through to Saturday, there might be a few showers developing towards the evening for Waikato to the Kapiti Coast, but there's going to be a mainly fine day elsewhere - should be some blue sky there for a lot of people."

Ms Blades said temperatures in the South Island could be slightly lower than in the North Island, but would still sit in the low 20s or high teens.

There would also be some scattered rain in the south, she said.

"Cloudy periods and a few scattered showers in the west on Friday. There may also be a few heavy falls as we go through to Saturday," she said.

"Mainly fine over in the east of the South Island, a little bit of scattered rain for Otago.

"Going through to Sunday, it's going to become fine in the west, those showers will clear."

Ms Blades said drier and warmer conditions than usual were expected for the start of April.
