Up to 70 staff at Shanton Fashions will lose their jobs and 17 of its 37 stores will close in a restructuring of the company, which was placed in voluntary administration last month.

Most of the stores to be closed are in provincial centres, though branches in Christchurch and Auckland will also close.

The administrator, Bryan Williams of BWA Insolvency, said some staff would be relocated, though the exact numbers were unknown.

He said he regretted the job losses but it was a necessary step toward rehabilitating a brand that had been trading for 30 years.

The company owes $7.9 million to 206 creditors, including the IRD, and holiday pay is also owed to employees.

Mr Williams said all entitlements would be paid to redundant workers on their last day of work, scheduled for next month.
