King's visit to mark Kingitanga connection with Ratana

2:27 pm on 24 January 2010

Kingi Tuheitia is due at Ratana pa on Sunday on a visit that will mark the strong connection between Ratana and the Kingitanga.

Kingi Tuheitia is expected at Ratana Pa this afternoon to pay tribute to the anniversary which marks the birthday of the founder of the church, Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana.

Historian Kelly Pene says Ratana and Tainui have been allies since 1933 when Kingi Koroki - the father of the late Maori Queen, Dame te Atairangikaahu - and Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana exchanged taonga in a bond of unity.

Mr Pene says that unity will be significant on Sunday when Kingi Tuheitia walks on to Ratana Marae craddling a baby who was born on 8 November, the day the Ratana Church was established in 1925.
