Work to change a dangerous intersection that is the gateway to the world-famous Waitomo Caves is to start next year.
The T intersection, where State Highway 3 and State Highway 37 meet in the King Country, would be changed to round-about.
A Canadian woman and an American man were killed in two separate crashes at the site in 2012.
A temporary 70 kilometre speed limit was introduced after the deaths.
Transport Agency principal safety engineer Michelle Te Wharau said a roundabout was a more forgiving intersection if people made mistakes.
