Fire breaks out at fertiliser plant

12:11 pm on 8 November 2014

The Fire Service had to use a giant fan to disperse a potentially toxic cloud of smoke following a fire at a Dargaville fertiliser plant this morning.

The service was called to the Ballance Agrinutrients factory on Edward Street at 8.15am.

The Fire Service said a hazardous substance unit from Whangarei was called in to help extinguish the possible sulphur fire, which was believed to have started in the fertiliser.

Neighbouring residents were evacuated until the smoke was dispersed.
