Emergency services have been tackling a five-hectare scrub fire south of Dunedin.

The Fire Service said it began just before 6.20pm yesterday.

Principal rural fire officer Stephanie Rotorangi said five crews and two helicopters tackled the fire, with one crew working through the night to contain it.

She said it is unclear how it started, although some tyres may have been set on fire.
