Lucy Knight, 43, sustained head injuries on Tuesday after rushing to the aid of Xiao Dong, who was being mugged outside a supermarket in the Auckland suburb of Northcote.

A short time ago, nearly $230,000 had been raised on the online fundraising site Give-A-Little from more than 4000 donations.

Mrs Knight's husband, Peter Thomas, spoke to TV3's Campbell Live tonight about the wave of support for the family.

"I believe it's not just within New Zealand but it's got to China. That is astounding, the level of support. We are humbled. We are overwhelmed. We feel very loved. I want to thank all of those people - the family, the friends, the wider community, the different communities within New Zealand."

Mr Thomas said his wife was progressing slowly but she has had a major shock to her body followed by major surgery.

He said she was heavily sedated but managed to talk to him today.
