Lucy Knight, 43, sustained head injuries after rushing to the aid of Xiao Dong, who was being mugged outside a supermarket in the Auckland suburb of Northcote on Tuesday.

Hendrix Hauwai, 17, was charged in the North Shore District Court yesterday with aggravated wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and assault with intent to rob, over the incident.

When he reappeared today, he was also charged with assault with intent to injure, in an unrelated incident.

Judge Philippa Sinclair remanded Mr Hauwai in custody until next month but ordered that he be segregated in the prison's youth unit.

Ms Knight remains in a stable condition in hospital.

A fundraising campaign for her and her family has attracted about $220,000.
