Auckland Council cuts up to 90 jobs

5:46 pm on 20 September 2014

The Auckland Council is making its biggest single staff cut, chopping up to 90 jobs and reducing spending by up to $14 million.

The cuts are coming in the council's 500-strong planning and strategy department.

Fifty roles will begin being eliminated within months and another forty over the next two years.

The Auckland Council said it reflected a shift in focus from making plans following amalgamation to carrying out the work.

Significant cuts are being made in the council's research unit, and some economic development functions have already been transferred to the council agency ATEED.

It is the biggest single staff cut yet at the four-year-old council, which last month cut 38 roles and more than $4 million from its communications and marketing budget.
