Motorcycle race organisers criticised

A coroner has criticised the managers of a motorcycle race that ended with the death of a rider saying a degree of professionalism needs to be created in the industry.

Craig Hyde was hit by another rider after he lost control and fell from his Suzuki bike while racing about 30 other people in Timaru in 2012.

The 46-year-old from Ashburton was described as a very experienced and respected rider, who was well known on the motorcycle racing circuit.

Coroner David Crerar said the race was organised by amateurs and volunteers.

Mr Crerar said while he could not link any of the managerial shortcomings with the circumstances surrounding the death, there were lapses from best practice that were sufficient to cause concern.

Rules promoted by Motorcycling New Zealand must be strictly adhered to and better training for all those involved in racing administration is required, he said.
