Green light for cycleway funding

The New Zealand Transport Agency has approved spending of more than $3 million for a cycleway in Auckland.

All up, the Auckland Transport-led project will cost $6.1 million, with the transport agency funding 53 percent of it.

The 5.5km route will be built on less busy streets around Dominion Road, one of the main arterial routes to the central city.

Cycle Action Auckland chairperson Barbara Cuthbert said the solution is good for getting more people to ride bikes, but most experienced cyclists will still travel on Dominion Road.

Ms Cuthbert said there should be cycleway on the road, separated from the bus lane.

Construction will start later this year.
