One person has been killed in a crash near Lake Pukaki in the South Island at about midday on Saturday.
Police say the car turned off the Aoraki/ Mt Cook road and crashed into a freight truck on State Highway 80, a popular tourist route.
Fire crews removed two people from the car.
A rescue helicopter was sent from Christchurch and one person was taken to Christchurch Hospital.
