MacDonald, 33, was found not guilty of the murder of his brother-in-law, Scott Guy, but was later jailed on a number of charges including arson and vandalism of Mr Guy's property.
Scott Guy was shot at the gates of his Manawatu farm in July 2010.
MacDonald was sentenced to five years in prison. He was refused parole last year after serving a third of his sentence.
The hearing will be held at Christchurch Men's Prison on 25 November.
