Anti wind farm group in liquidation

An environmental lobby group that campaigned against windfarms in the South Island is now in liquidation.

The Upland Landscape Protection Society applied to the High Court in September to overturn resource consents for two windfarms in South Dunedin and Central Otago.

But the case was struck out and the court ordered the group to pay almost $50,000 to three councils and TrustPower and Meridian Energy.

The society says one of the power companies involved, TrustPower, instigated the move to liquidate.

Group legal coordinator Ewan Carr describes this as draconian and bullying, and said it takes small interest groups out of a public process.

He says there is no regret for taking matters to the High Court.
