Police in Eastern Bay of Plenty have launched an investigation after the bodies of two premature babies were found buried in a backyard.
The twins' bodies were uncovered at a property in Matata on Friday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen said on Tuesday the situation is sensitive and very distressing for the family.
Mr Standen said medical experts are working with police and a post-mortem will be carried out.
Until this is complete, police will not comment further or speculate on the outcome.
