NZ-born journalist released from detention in Libya

A New Zealand-born film maker who had been detained in Libya has been released.

Freelancer Sharron Ward was in the country making a documentary on the uprising that overthrew the Gaddafi regime.

The British Foreign Office in London confirmed Ms Ward was detained in the Libyan capital of Tripoli on Thursday.

She was subsequently released to British Embassy staff and is being offered consular assistance.

Ms Ward studied at Otago University and works mainly on films about social change and social justice.
