World record set in women's relay final

The United States blitzed the field to win the women's 4x100 metres relay final claiming gold and a new world record at the Olympic Stadium in London.

Tianna Madison, Allyson Felix, Bianca Knight and Carmelita Jeter finished in a world and Olympic record time of 40.82 seconds.

The BBC reports the previous record of 41.37 was set by East Germany in 1985.

Jamaica came second and Ukraine won the bronze medal. Nigeria was fourth.

The US team failed to reach the final at the Beijing Olympics.

In the men's 4x400m relay: the Bahamas passed the United States on the final straight to win gold.

The US won the silver medal. Trinidad and Tobago took bronze.
