New Zealand's Sarah Walker has won silver in the final of the BMX competition at the London Olympics.

She placed fourth at the Beijing Games in 2008 and recorded a time of 38.133 seconds on the track near Olympic Park on Friday.

Mariana Pajon from Colombia won the gold medal in 37.706s, and Laura Smulders from the Netherlands took bronze in 38.231s.

Walker, 24, said the disappointment of Beijing was the motivation behind her desire to perform in London.

Walker said that helped her development as a person and steeled her determination not to let another opportunity slip in London.

Meanwhile, New Zealand's Mark Willers failed to make the final on Friday.
