A New Zealand Paralympian has tested positive for a banned substance but will be allowed to compete in the upcoming Paralympics in London.
Peter Martin, who will compete in the shot put and javelin, tested positive for the drug probenecid.
Martin told a Sports Tribunal hearing that the breach occurred when he received treatment for a serious arm infection at a medical centre.
He was diagnosed with cellulitis, requiring immediate treatment.
The doctor involved told the hearing that the infection was potentially life-threatening if left untreated.
Martin acknowledged that there was more he could have done to ensure that he was not prescribed banned drugs, but says his level of fault was very low in the circumstances.
The Sports Tribunal says it is satisfied that Martin didn't take the drug for performance enhancement or use as a masking agent and reprimanded him.
