NZ athletes get surprise visit from the Queen

Three of New Zealand's Olympic athletes had an unexpected audience with royalty on Sunday morning after the Queen came to the Olympic village to meet competitors from 10 Commonwealth nations.

The boxer Alexis Pritchard, weightlifter Richie Patterson and New Zealand's flagbearer Nick Willis were asked to don their number ones for the royal party, which included Prince Philip and Princess Anne.

New Zealand's Chef de Mission Dave Currie says the Queen charmed the athletes as she'd done her homework and knew who they were.

He says Princess Anne, a former Olympian herself had a more casual approach than the rest of the royal party, and helped herself to a tray of food in the athletes dining hall.
